New Norton Century45™ Centerless Grinding Wheels Dramatically Increase Wheel Life, Improve Stock Removal and Reduce Cycle Times.
WORCESTER, MA, USA (May 24, 2016) –Saint-Gobain Abrasives, the world’s leading manufacturer and supplier of performance-engineered abrasives, has launched a new line of centerless grinding wheels to its bonded abrasives portfolio.
The newly developed Norton Century45 centerless bond platform features an exclusive chemistry that greatly improves grain retention in the wheel. Better grain retention means wheels are constructed with more porosity for a given hardness. This translates into wheels having a hard grade with the performance of a softer grade, providing a range of benefits.
Norton Century45 wheels are available with ceramic, aluminum oxide, silicon carbide grain and abrasive blends to maximize user grinding safety and efficiency. These wheels reduce cycle times up to 50%, improve stock removal over 30% and increase wheel life from 30%-100% versus standard products currently on the market.
Norton Century45 provides a continually sharp wheel face that achieves over 30% more stock removal, reducing grinding times through fewer passes to achieve optimal results. Operators will generate more parts through reduced production cycle times when using Norton Century45 wheels.
Norton Century45 centerless grinding wheels also can decrease grinding noise levels by as much as 23.2dB, even when grinding hard-to-grind alloys such as Inconel 718, thus increasing operator safety.
To put this reduction in context, many commercially-available foam ear plugs offer Noise Reduction Ratings in the range of 25 to 28dB.

1. Inconel, alloys
Application: Centerless Bar Grinding
Part Diameter & Part Length: 0.5" - 1.75" in diameter; 28 feet in length
Norton Test Wheel: 32CA60-PB45 (10"), 32CA80-PB45 (10")
Competitor Wheel: 24"x 20"x12" 80-grit silicon carbide resin wheel
Results: The Norton Century45 grinding wheel was able to increase stock removal from 0.005" per pass to 0.012" per pass, showing an improvement of 140%. The Norton wheel also produced a 100% increase in wheel life while offering a 50%reduction in cycle time. Additionally, it was observed that the Norton wheel significantly reduced noise during grind.
2. 1045 Stainless Steel (300 Series), copper
Application: Centerless Bar Grinding

Norton Test Wheel: 3NQAC54-RB45, Norton Quantum ceramic alumina resin wheel

Results: With Norton Century45 grinding wheel, there was a 243% increase in G-ratio over the competitive wheel. An improved surface finish across the bar length was also observed.
