SAINT-GOBAIN ABRASIVES SHOWCASES GRINDING TOOL INNOVATIONS AT GRINDTEC

Saint-Gobain Abrasives, Hall 7, stand 7065, GrindTec, Augsburg, Germany, 15-18 March, 2022

Saint-Gobain Abrasives, the world's top manufacturer and supplier of performance abrasives, will present its latest grinding tool innovations from its Norton and Norton Winter brands at this year's GrindTec, the leading international exhibition for grinding technology. The show's highlights include Norton Quantum Prime, a proprietary nano-crystalline ceramic grain that provides unprecedented productivity benefits and Norton Winter Q-Flute Prime, the high-performance diamond wheels for flute grinding.
Other key topics of the fair involve high-performance solutions for the electric vehicle engine and gearbox components grinding.
The company will also be demonstrating the advantages of its high porosity 'naphthalene free' abrasives designed to provide the highest performance while reducing the environmental impact linked to the grinding process.
With a full range of abrasive products for a variety of applications from grinding and dressing to finishing and polishing across six key markets: Tools, Gears, Aerospace, Bearing, Automotive and General Engineering, Saint-Gobain Abrasives supports these industries with the latest sustainable technology to reduce costs while delivering improved performance.

Performance Revolution
Norton Quantum Prime will be one of the top innovations on the Saint-Gobain Abrasives stand. Thanks to the unique micro-fracture properties of the nano-crystalline ceramic grain, the grinding wheels deliver outstanding efficiency, significantly longer life, and excellent part quality. The unique formulation and reduced crystal size allow the grain to self-sharpen more efficiently. This keeps the wheel sharper for longer, reducing heat, wear flats, and minimising the need for dressing. Combined with the latest Norton bond technologies, the grain breaks down more consistently, leading to improved part quality and geometry and excellent surface finish even at high MRR. Norton Quantum Prime can be used in a variety of markets and applications, including automotive and aerospace.

Another revolutionary solution for large contact surface grinding operations is the new AltosX with Norton QuantumTM technology. The wheel provides excellent free cutting action and durability to maximise performance and part quality.

From reduced carbon footprint in our production process and removal of artificial pore inducers to longer product life and energy savings, both Norton Quantum Prime and AltosX allow you to reduce the environmental impact linked to the grinding operation.

Solutions for Electric Vehicles
One of the key focuses of the Saint-Gobain Abrasives stand is the surface grinding of engine parts for electric vehicles. Under the Norton and Norton Winter brands, we will present a comprehensive portfolio of precision abrasives for grinding and finishing electric vehicle powertrain components.
This includes the Vitron7 cBN vitrified wheel, designed explicitly for e-rotor shaft diameter and seal/bearing seats grinding of electrical engines. The Vitron7 features a very regular distribution of the cBN grains and unique porosity, delivering up to 30% longer wheel life.

Optimised gear-grinding
Saint Gobain will also present an advanced Norton Xtrimium grinding platform for the gear manufacturing industry. Introduced in 2017, Xtrimium was designed to offer a simplified solution for all gear grinding applications. Since then, to meet ever more stringent requirements for tighter tolerances, higher profile accuracy and improved surface finish, the product portfolio has been expanded and upgraded to deliver the complete technical solution for worm, dual worm and baby worm as well as profile and bevel grinding.  Our latest Dual Worm technology provides superior performance in grinding one or two-speed gearboxes of electric vehicles (EV).
In addition to outstanding quality performance, the Xtrimium platform offers higher productivity thanks to an enhanced formulation that enables wheels to run faster and avoid burn, thus improving efficiency and delivering a superior surface finish.

The latest innovations for tool machining
The Tools industry representatives will be particularly interested in the latest innovations from Norton Winter.
Q-Flute PRIME is the next advanced solution for flute grinding of carbide shank tools. The new diamond bond has been engineered to meet the industry productivity requirements and boost the grinding performance to a new, unprecedented level of efficiency. With significantly lower grinding forces, improved surface quality and up to 50% increased profile retention, Q-Flute PRIME delivers improved edge stability and superior surface quality while offering the highest performance.
The next novelty is the PCX Prime. These high-performance diamond wheels for PCD and PcBN tools grinding offer higher feed rates and reduced recondition intervals resulting in improved process productivity and significant cost savings.
