NORTON SWITCHES TO BOXES MADE OF 100% RECYCLED MATERIAL!
As part of our commitment to building a more sustainable future, and making the world a better home, here at Norton, we’re making an important shift in our packaging approach, replacing our current white boxes featuring the blue Norton logo, with brown boxes made from 100% recycled materials, printed with single colour black ink. What’s more, we’re also switching sealing tape from plastic to new, unprinted brown paper tape.
WHY SWITCH?
We care about the environment and introducing packaging made from recycled materials plays a key role in the actions we’re taking across our supply chain to reduce our environmental footprint.
By moving away from the existing box format (white and blue) to the new (brown and black), there are two key benefits:
- Boxes will use 100% recycled materials – this helps to reduce waste as using recycled materials keeps them out of landfill and helps to preserve natural resources.
- We’re reducing the use of chemicals and ink – by printing directly onto the recycled corrugated card, we’re removing the treated white gloss chrome laminate and reducing the amount of ink used. This results in using less chemicals, improving recyclability.
Throughout 2024, 80% of our new Norton branded brown boxes will make the switch to 100% recycled material, and 100% of our boxes will be fully recyclable. This initiative is a huge step in reducing demand for virgin materials as well as the ecological footprint associated with production.
To distinguish between recycled and non-recycled boxes, the box design will feature distinctive icons. The 80% of boxes made from recycled materials will bear the pictogram ‘100% recycled & 100% recyclable’, with the remaining 20% of boxes featuring an icon, communicating their recyclability.
In addition, to comply with the latest material identification legislation, Norton boxes will also prominently display the ‘PAP 20’ pictogram, indicating that the box is made from corrugated board. This not only helps consumers identify the material but also underscores our adherence to industry standards.
COMMUNICATING THE SWITCH
All boxes will feature a ‘SCAN ME’ QR code in the shape of a tree. When scanned, the QR code will bring users to this very page, to learn more about the commitments we’re making to creating a more sustainable future and how this initiative contributes to ‘making the world a better home’, Saint-Gobain’s purpose to help build a fairer and more sustainable world.
Although gradual, to minimise waste, the transition to recycled packaging solutions is a significant step forward in Saint-Gobain Abrasives’ plan to make 100% of its packaging recyclable by 2030. It showcases dedication to reducing our environmental footprint and sets a positive example for others in the industry to follow. We’re on track to proving packaging can be both practical and respectful of our planet, paving the way for a more sustainable future!
