Let’s take a look at how RazorStar® can revolutionise your grinding productivity:

HIGHER CUT RATE

The engineered ceramic grain shape with tough microstructure cuts faster and removes more material than any conventional ceramic grain. This is combined with the highest percentage of grains applied to the backing in an upright position for razor-sharp cutting.

Norton RazorStar Higher Cut Rate

How does cut rate effect productivity?

Faster grinding means more parts are processed in less time. Grinding more parts over a given time reduces bottlenecks, increasing production capacity and overall productivity. Extensive testing has shown RazorStar® boosts productivity as it removes more material faster meaning fewer disc changes, grinding down process cost.

What are ‘upright grains’?

Using a patent-pending method of application means an extremely high percentage of grains are fixed to the backing in an upright position. Flat grains lying down don’t cut, and RazorStar® has many more grains pointing upwards compared to other abrasives, who have more flat grains.

Grain Orientation

BELTS: LESS ENERGY

In grinding applications using a RazorStar® belt, the outstanding cut rate of the grain enables very fast grinding, reducing machine time and energy consumption by up to 20% on Stainless Steel compared to a ceramic shaped grain product, and up to 34% on Inconel compared to a ceramic shaped grain product*.

*These results depend on exact test conditions (pressure, workpiece dimensions, operating speeds). Evaluation is based on 11 different test protocols representative of our customers’ belt applications.

DISCS: SMOOTHER GRINDING, MORE CONTROL

Thanks to the razor-sharp grains which glide through the metal, grinding is smoother, drawing less power from the machine for better operator control. Less force is also required as the grains do the work, minimising operator fatigue and reducing prolonged exposure to vibration.

LONGER LIFE

The benefits of longer product life are fewer abrasive changes, which means less downtime replacing the old discs with new and starting over.  However, the major benefit is the reduction in abrasive consumption. Consuming fewer abrasives means lower consumable cost per part.

Norton RazorStar Longer Life

How does RazorStar® last longer than other abrasives?

Unlike traditional ceramic grain, the grains used in RazorStar® are formed by two linear regions which join to form razor-sharp tips. It’s these sharp tips that deliver a high initial cut and continue to slice through the metal, throughout the entire product life, unlike other shaped ceramic grain which can become blunt during grinding and drag through the metal, generating heat and a slower cut rate. The unique patented geometry enables each grain to fracture into similar sharp shapes during grinding. This ensures grain uniformity and consistency in shape, strength and cutting behaviour.

BELTS: LESS WASTE

In belt grinding tests, the extended life of RazorStar® helped to reduce belt waste by up to 57% on Stainless Steel compared to a ceramic shaped grain product (average of 32%), and up to 74% (average of 48%)  on Inconel compared to a ceramic shaped grain product*.

* Results depend on exact test conditions (pressure, workpiece dimensions, operating speeds). Evaluation is based on 11 different test protocols representative of our customers’ belt applications.

COOLER CUT

Thermal damage of a component is not only inconvenient, it costs time and money. Combined with other risks including potential crack formation, changes in residual stress and microstructure of the metal, the effect on productivity can be damaging when re-work is required or components have to be disposed of.

Norton RazorStar Cooler Cut

Grinding burn can come from either grinding swarf clogging the abrasive, or grains dulling over time. Eliminating the risk of burn is a huge benefit as it eradicates unplanned additional time and cost.

How does RazorStar® prevent burn?

The unique sharpness of the grain, combined with the special topsize grinding aid, which acts as a cooling lubricant to help to significantly reduce heat generation, results in no thermal damage of the workpiece which means no discolouration, and no need for rework.
