Focus on scope 3: Reducing value chain emissions

Raw materials & energy purchases / transportation / our sold products & end-of-life

Transportation

KPIs

  • 75% of transport flows to be measured in 2021
  • Target to achieve 85% (measurement) in 2024
  • CO2 reduction per year: -500 mt

ONGOING

  • Already reached 1124mt saved in 2023
  • Several more sustainable solutions have already been implemented (E.g. Biogas, barge, short sea)
  • Several green solutions already implemented (E.g. Biogas and double deck trucks, barges for inland sea freight, multimodal solutions, short sea, Sustainable Marine Fuel (SMF) for some of our freight forwarders)

INITIATIVES

  • Fully measure emission by category on 85% of our scope in 2024
  • Implement more sustainable solutions (HVO trucks on EU to ES June 2024, and PL <> NL in Q4 2024)
  • Build and consolidate partnership only with carriers having ambitious CO2 roadmap and concrete insetting solutions. All others are being dismissed.
  • Management of the SMF prices (green sea freight fuels) on the account of SG group as a whole

Packaging

KPIs

  • 30 Projects for EMEA: minimum three top projects per country
  • Reduction per year: -20 mt plastic
  • Reduction of equivalent CO2 per year: -60 mt CO2

ONGOING

  • From >60 ideas to >40 projects done / in progress
  • >35 mt of plastic saved in 2021 vs 2019
  • >100 mt of CO2 saved, and on track for 200 tons

INITIATIVES

  • Roadmap for packaging transformation
  • Country commitments: three top actions /year
  • Shift to mono-print recycled cardboard boxes
  • R&D initiatives to reach Group targets (100% recyclable
and min 30% recycled content or bio-source)

Raw materials*

KPIs

  • R&D projects on four pillars (BA, TW, TW resins, CA): 15/year
  • Primary materials saved: -50 mt per year (-100 mt 2025)
  • Reduction of equivalent CO2: -65 mt per year in 2025
  • Consumption visibility: 90% of consumption visible by 2025 (paper, grain, resin, cloth, etc.)

ONGOING

  • Identification of raw materials waste at thin wheel plants
  • At the end of 2022, we have visibility on 65% of our CO2 emissions

INITIATIVES

  • Promote consideration of wasterials with R&D
  • Study / initiate pilot actions
  • Launched Supplier Green Deal in 2022 – an ongoing initiative (renewed annually) to foster dialogue with our Top 112 suppliers to drive the decarbonisation of our raw materials & procurement (Scope 3). We exchange ideas and align roadmaps. Furthermore, we are committed to supporting suppliers with fewer resources and capabilities.

* Use of sustainable raw materials (including Wasterials) in order to reduce CO2 emissions and limit our footprint on raw materials scarcity

Decarbonising our transportation

2021: 5% reduction CO2

  • Three diesel trucks replaced by one daily shuttle with LNG biogas (440 mt saved per year)
  • Containers transported by barges, not road (70+ mt saved per year)
  • Goods moved by containers in shortsea instead of road

2022: 10% reduction CO2

  • Interco shipment frequency reduced by 50% (and shipped by biogas trucks)
  • Interco shipments grouped, cross-docked (and shipped by biogas trucks)
  • Shortsea solutions instead of road
  • Hydrogen-powered trucks for long distance

2023-24: 15% reduction CO2

  • Explore partnerships to implement hydrogen / biogas / B100 solutions for long-haul transport
  • Develop more sustainable solutions with carriers for ‘last mile delivery’ domestic distribution
  • Develop consolidated shipment
  • Better solutions by freight train
