Your Right Angle Grinder (RAG) solutions for Metal Fabrication
Over the following weeks our Norton experts will be demonstrating our RAG process (right angle grinding). Details on Step 1 – Cutting-Off and Step 2 – Heavy Duty Grinding are outlined below.
We have developed the RAG process to help you choose the right solution for each stage of the application. This process has been developed as a result of our technical expertise and experience gained over many years of manufacturing products for metal fabrication, in addition to working with customers to understand their needs and requirements when using abrasive products in their day-to-day work. The RAG process consists of 8 main steps and includes products such as cutting-off and grinding wheels, flap and fibre discs and finishing and polishing products.
Our colour-coded chart of metal fabrication operations represents the eight key application processes of metal fabrication when using an angle grinder.
GRIT APPLICATION TABLE
It is worth noting that the table below shows the grit overlap for each product type at each stage of the application process.

STEP 1 – Cutting-OffNorton Quantum cutting-off wheels are easy to use, easy to steer and deliver consistent results. No dust, no smell so the process is more comfortable. Norton Quantum is a very comfortable disc to use, offering the longest life on the market. | |
STEP 2 - Heavy Duty GrindingRemove the excess weld with a Norton Quantum3 inox or Norton Vulcan grinding wheel at a 30-45° angle. The grinding discs create a coarse surface finish so it’s a good idea to leave a small amount of weld on the surface. TOP TIP: Combo - Cut and Grind with one disc, maximum comfort and great alternative to regular grinding wheels. |
