Floor Sanding Product FAQs

Man sanding wood floors using Norton SandDollar floor pads on a rotary floor buffer

Does Norton have a clean-release masking tape?

Norton Blue Masking Tape meets or exceeds market standards. The medium adhesion backing holds just enough tackiness to stick well to surfaces without the risk of pulling paint off the wall or leaving adhesive behind.

This premium grade, clean-release tape comes in various widths for maximum versatility. Ideal for masking trim to protect from stain as well as masking and hanging plastic sheeting for dust control.

What are Random Orbital Sander discs used for?

Random Orbital Sanders are used to sand stair treads and can be used as a final sanding on edges to help blend any scratches left by the edger machine. ProSand Multi-Air Cyclonic discs and MeshPower discs are ideal for this process.

Why is Norton Red Heat better for sanding off old floor coatings?

Sanding old coatings can be labor-intensive and require a lot of material, especially if the coatings gum up the paper quickly. Heat and friction cause the old coatings to soften and then stick to the paper. Norton Red Heat can be effective for removing these old coatings since the ceramic grain is super sharp and cuts cooler; thus, it doesn’t heat up the finish as much and therefore tends to minimize loading.

What is FastTrack Service?

FastTrack is a special-order service for sanding belts. Items are identified as FastTrack in the floor sanding catalog by FT following the part number. FastTrack belts must be ordered directly from customer service.

5-day Manufacturing Lead Time Order Requirements: • Minimum order qty: 1 case per order • Maximum order qty: 3 cases per order NOTE: Standard manufacturing leeway of 10% ±.

What belt grit order should I use for sanding pre-finished floors?

Norton makes abrasives designed specifically for sanding pre-finished floors that do not require any special sanding sequence. BlazePlus is the ideal choice for this application. Start with 36- or 40-grit like you would on a normal finish. Start your first cut at a slight angle to remove the finish, flatten the floor and remove most of the grooves. Then finish with your subsequent grits parallel to the direction of the floor. BlazeX edger discs are the ideal choice for sanding the edges of the floor.
