Using Quick‑Mount Hubs on Portable Grinding Wheels
What Is a Quick‑Mount Hub?
A quick‑mount hub is a threaded hub permanently attached to a portable grinding wheel. It allows the wheel to be mounted directly onto a threaded angle‑grinder arbor without additional flanges or tools, reducing setup time.
Only wheels manufactured with an integrated quick‑mount hub should be used as quick‑mount systems.
Proper Mounting Procedure
- Lock the Arbor. Press the lock button on the back of the angle grinder to prevent the arbor from turning.
- Install the Wheel. Thread the quick‑mount hub onto the arbor and tighten by hand only.
- A wrench is not required.
- The system uses the self‑locking effect:
- Right‑angle grinders rotate clockwise and use standard right‑hand threads.
- Rotational force increases friction, naturally tightening the threads during use.
Proper Removal Procedure
- Press the lock button on the back of the angle grinder.
- Place a wrench on the nut portion of the quick‑mount hub and turn it counterclockwise to break it loose.
- Once loosened, remove the wheel by hand by continuing to turn it counterclockwise until fully unthreaded.
Important Safety Notes
- Only use wheels designed and manufactured with quick‑mount hubs.
- Never modify a wheel to create your own quick‑mount system.
- Always follow ANSI, OSHA, and manufacturer safety requirements when using grinding wheels and power tools.
- Inspect wheels before use and verify compatibility with the machine’s speed rating.
