Right Angle Grinder (RAG) – Stock Removal
Stock removal in metal fabrication follows the cutting-off and or grinding stages. It aims to shape the part, for example by removing weld seams and excess material prior to subsequent surface improvement steps such as blending, refining and deburring.
The typical abrasive grit range will vary from 36 (rough stock removal) to 120 grit (intermediate stock removal). The choice of which abrasive to use for the stock removal step will depend on a number of factors :-
- The incoming part condition; i.e. will a coarse or finer stock removal solution be required?
- The material being ground; the more challenging or difficult to grind materials will usually require a high performance abrasive solution.
- The number of parts being processed through the fabrication shop. The use of higher powered angle grinders with performance abrasives will speed up processing times to improve efficiency.
Most fabricators will use an angle grinder in their day-to-day work to cut and prepare metal surfaces, which is why Saint-Gobain Abrasives have developed a number of options to ensure the right product is available for the right job. The Right Angle Grinder (RAG) process helps metal fabricators choose the correct product for metal preparation and fabrication, which can help to increase efficiency, minimise waste and add value to businesses that operate large scale production

Weld Removal To A Commercial Finish
The following Norton Quantum fibre disc is recommended for weld removal to a commercial finish on stainless steel (this would be after step 1 heavy duty grinding).
STOCK REMOVAL Norton Quantum fibre discs in grit P50 at 10-15° angle will remove the weld quickly. For faster material removal, an air-cooled back-up pad with grit P36 works best. Back-up pads also available see page 30 for details.
